My artwork is created using my unique original technique. Some images are worked up from on-site sketches or from imagination into a pencil drawing resembling a jig-saw puzzle. The work is then 'painted' by individually cutting each piece of the drawing from exquisite papers. Other images are created by arranging small paper squares, diamonds or rectangles into a mosaic pattern.
By careful selection when cutting these pieces, from a larger patterned sheet, their individual patterns can be composed into the image I want by rotation and specific placement.
After the numerous paper pieces of the work are assembled, changes, sometimes dramatic other times subtle, are made until the image pleases my eye. Only then are the pieces permanently mounted on solid colour archival matboard.
My process involves carving a groove, using surgical tools, around the perimeter of each individual piece of paper. Then the groove is tooled, highlighting each piece, and giving the image definition and depth.
The look and mood of a particular line drawing can further be changed dramatically by chosing a different palette of papers.
As an accomplished woodworker I hand make some of the frames. They can be painted, stained or oil finished woods such as black cherry.
* Please note: Photographs of my work do not capture well the vibrancy of the textural and reflective qualities of the papers used; fine detailing and the relief effect from carving is also diminished.
