Pines growing in the rocky landscape of the shores of Georgian Bay struggle against the relentless wind & cling to life despite the sometimes scant amount of soil. They can take on a twisted & gnarled appearance as they fight for survival.
Sailing on Georgian Bay taught me that a storm can come up very quickly. Towering dark threatening clouds darken the skies. Feet scramble on deck to get the sails shortened before the winds hit. All part of the excitement of sailing.
In my years of sailing on Georgian Bay I witnessed and marveled at the tenacity of life. Against all odds scruffy pine trees would manage to gain a tenuous foothold in the barren glacier smoothed rocky landscape. In small pockets of soil created by the fallen boughs of previous generations they face the west winds whipped up out on the bay giving them their iconic eastward lean.

ISLET of PINES "Eilean na Moine"
I lived in Scotland for three years, toured the country extensively and fell in love with the rugged, ancient and austere beauty of the highlands, lochs and coastline. On a trip to Maillag in the Scottish Western Highlands from Glasgow the road passes on the north side of Loch Eilt. In the western end of the loch I saw a small pine covered island. It caught my eye because of its compositional perfection. Its name is Eilean na Moine Islet. This is the inspiration behind Islet of Pines, I later discovered that the islet played a starring role in the Harry Potter movies as it was chosen as Dumbledore's final resting place. This islet is a magnificent example of the sublime artistry of nature. |
LONG VIEW is a look out over the bay from high on the shoreline. Smaller pines and spruces cascade down the steep drop off to the shore. Glacier smoothed small rocky islands can be seen in the shallow water. Beyond, the bay extends to the horizon. The 'SPRING' work reflects the annual renewal of life in colours reminiscent of the turquoise 'new buds' seen every spring at the tips of the spruce branches. |

The 'sunset' series brings a riot of colour to some of my popular images including added details. All my works are originals - hand cut, carved and tooled. Each work is unique.
This collection of three images called Pine Ridge show the dramatic changes in mood and visual effect with changes in the 'paper palette' I choose. |
